This project is so fun and easy to do!
The end result is a personal word search collection that will remind you of all the fun things you did over the summer.
You can also make copies of your puzzles and share your collection with family and friends.
Keep pencil and paper handy all summer long and make your word lists from the activities you do and the places you go. For instance, if you visit a museum, write down words that are associated with that visit, or if you have a family game night, use words that remind you of all the fun you had.
Make lists when you go to the beach, or when you watch a really awesome movie, or when you are traveling somewhere in the car. Don't worry about the lists being too long. You can create more than one puzzle using the same theme, such as "At the Movies" and "At the Movies 2".
You might choose to create your puzzles one at a time all throughout the summer. Or maybe you would prefer to do it them all at once as a project at the end of the season. Whatever you prefer, you should print or make at least two grids per puzzle. One to use for the solutions key and one for the complete word search. You may also want extra grid copies in case you make a mistake.
You can choose word search grids from our two different sizes. We have a 10 x 10 word search grid and a 15 x 15 word search grid. The smaller the grid, the shorter the list of words needs to be.
You can find many other grids online and you can even find sites that will let you enter your words and they will create the puzzle for you.
Or, if you want them to be completely your own, you can draw your own boxes for the puzzles and use a ruler to put the letters in evenly or make your own grid lines in the boxes.
Choose the words from one of the lists that you want to add to your puzzle collection. Write them into one of the grids in all directions. Enter them vertically (from bottom to top, and from top to bottom), horizontally (from the left side to the right side and from the right side to the left side), and diagonally (backward and forward from all sides).
After you've placed the words, write them on the lines next to the grid. Don't write them down until you've finished your puzzle, just in case you don't end up using them all.
After all of the words are entered, save a copy of the grid to use as a solution key.
Now fill in the rest of the grid with random letters. Try not to accidentally form other words.
How easy was that? When you've finished with all of your word search puzzles, you can organize them into a binder and save them forever. You can make copies of them whenever you wish to share with your family and friends.
