All the sites I've listed below offer absolutely free images. You can use them for personal or commercial reasons, you can edit them in any way you like, and you don't need to give anyone credit for them, unless you're inclined to.
This is my way of saying thank-you to all of these guys. I'm trying to improve on Nicholas Academy and my pages, both old and new, need images for Pinterest users. The only problem I have is in trying to choose from all the beautiful snapshots they offer!

This is an alphabetical list of places where you can get free images to use for whatever reason you like. I'll tell you all about them and include my thoughts on them.
A word of caution: as with most internet sites, children should be supervised when browsing.
Burst
Free stock photos for websites and commercial use. Nicely arranged categories. Clicking on a photo will take you to the free download page with information on the contributor and the license agreement. Sometimes it is a Creative Commons license, sometimes it is Burst Some Rights Reserved. My search on education brought up 302 photos.
Cool Text
I've used this free graphics generator on and off for years. It's absolutely awesome! They have tons of colors and fonts and effects to choose from. Create logos, text ads, animated graphics, and more for your website or project.
Free-Images
This is a project that has collected millions of high quality public domain images. It was created by "a guy who likes to build websites". He gives information about the original source on each image page. My search on education brought up 1508 images.
FreeImages
Over 300,000 photos that, according to their license, can be used on websites, blogs, social media, advertisements, film and television productions, web and mobile applications, magazines, newspapers, books, brochures, flyers, product packaging, for decorative use, and for personal use. My search on education brought up 5000 photos.
Pexels
Pexels has thousands of royalty free stock photos. You can use the images any way you like, under the "Pexel License", which says you can use them for free for commercial or non-commercial purposes. What's really awesome is that Pexels contributors have a donate button on their page. What a great way for these photographers to earn a little for their work. They also have photo challenges, where you can upload photos and win prizes. My search on education brought up 740 photos.
Pixabay
Pixabay offers over 1 million high quality stock images and videos through the Pixabay License, which allows you to use them for whatever purpose you like. Like most others, they show some images from paid sites to help cover the cost of offering so many free images. If you contribute photos, the site will be ad free for you. They allow you to donate to them, if you like, and also allow you to donate to the photographers. They also have a forum and a blog. My search on education brought up 5,689 free images.
PublicDomainPictures
More than 250,000 free public domain pictures. They have a monthly competition for original image uploads, with prizes from 20 to 100 dollars. You have the option of premium downloads or free downloads. They also have an easy setup for contributors to get donations through Paypal. My search on education brought up 16 pages of free images.
StockSnap.io
The images on StockSnap are released under the terms of the Creative Commons CC0 license. Hundreds of images are added to the site weekly. No permission is needed to use the images. My search on education brought up 84 results.
Unsplash
Over 850,000 photos at the time of this writing and they are growing every day. The site is just amazing! Sections include all the free photos, of course, plus an inspiring manifesto, a blog about the creation of their open photography community, and an awesome showcase of things being created with the photos, such as articles, apps, websites, and even remixes of the images. My search on education brought up 318 photos.
