Back in December, I had it in mind for us to move out on our own again. Alex and I have lived with Joey off and on since I became a single mom about five years ago. I wanted to get a quiet place in the country, where we would feel safe being alone.
A couple of months ago I mentioned it to my friend Spider, who owns a few properties in the country. Today he called me with news of a place he had available. I was excited, but couldn't believe the timing. We had planned to leave tomorrow and wouldn't be returning for three months.
Wanda and Alex and I went to look at it. It was only sixteen miles from Joey. It was set back about two miles from the highway, with four or five surrounding houses--one of which belonged to Spider and his wife. Behind it was a wildlife preserve. It was a trailer, which I wasn't thrilled with, but it had two bedrooms, one and a half baths, a few acres of land we could use, a gated driveway, a carport, a shed, washer and dryer, free water, and a cat. It was also completely furnished. And the rent? Just $400 a month!
I told Spider I could not cancel our trip, but I definitely wanted the place. He said he would hold it for us for two hundred a month, but I was very thankful to have it, so I told him I would pay the four.
Joey was a little disappointed when I told him. He loves having us there with him. He was happy for us though and knew we would be foolish to pass up such a great opportunity.
