Last night my son and I were outside with the porch light on. We witnessed a quite curious sight--wasps flying at night! Is that possible?

Last night my son and I were outside with the porch light on. We witnessed a quite curious sight--wasps flying around the door, the light, and the cat's food and water bowls. Wasps that fly at night? Is that even possible?
They all acted as if they were injured. Some couldn't stay in the air, some walked on the porch, apparently unable to take flight, and some would fly right into the door and the light as if they were blind. It was a little cool outside. We wondered if maybe the warm day air had brought them out and now the colder night air had them stunned and confused.
This morning I found the cat's water bowl full of dead wasps, as you can see in this picture:
I went online to find out why this would happen and I found out these are probably not wasps at all! These are most likely moths that have assumed the appearance of wasps. It was hard to believe, but on close inspection, we could find no stingers. I couldn't get a really clear close up, but the picture below is pretty good. I couldn't find a site that had moths this color, so I don't know what to call them.
