Science | Science Experiment of the Week 2 | 226 - Finding Fat

Compare Fat Content - Test different kinds of chips and other foods to look at the amount of fat they contain.

This Week's Experiment - #226 Finding Fat

These experiments are from Robert Krampf - The Happy Scientist

I wanted to do a health related experiment this week. As I sat here munching from a bag of potato chips, I thought it might be interesting to look at the amount of fat in different chips. If nothing else, it would be a good excuse to open those other two bags of chips in the cabinet. To try this, you will need:

several different kinds of chips
a paper towel

Gather several different kinds of chips to test. I used corn chips, potato chips, tortilla chips, and pretzels. You could also use things like popcorn, crackers, cookies, and other foods. Place the paper towel on a flat surface. For each type of chip, draw a circle large enough to hold three or four chips and write the kind of chip by the circle. Place three or four chips into each of the circles, looking for chips that are fairly flat and about the same size. Eat the ones that are too small or too curly. Just don't overdo it. We would not want you to wind up at the doctor's.

Now all you have to do is wait for about 30 minutes. During that time, you must resist the desire to nibble on the chips in your test. You may also have to defend them from cats, dogs, younger brothers and other lower life forms.

After about 30 minutes, remove the chips. You could dump them into a bowl for people to snack on. I ate mine. Then look at the paper towel. Unless you had REALLY oily chips, you probably don't see much. Pick up the paper towel and hold it in front of a window or light. Now you see something. The oil spots on the paper towel show up as light, "wet looking" spots on the towel. The more oil there was in the chips, the more oil there will on the paper towel. The oil soaks into the paper and acts as a pathway to carry the light through the paper.

I found that the corn chips had the most, closely followed by potato chips. The pretzels had the least, which means that I should eat more pretzels and fewer corn chips.
